BayREN's Contractor Heat Pump Mentorship Program

In 2027, a new Bay Area Air District rule will phase out gas water heaters. Contractors will need to install heat pump water heaters when replacing existing gas water heaters.

BayREN’s Heat Pump Mentorship Program is launching, connecting plumbers who want to gain live, hands-on HPWH installation experience with seasoned installers, focused on residential buildings. The first cohort has been selected and will be hosted in Santa Clara County. The next cohort will be in Alameda County.

Mentee Responsibilities

  • Commit to three days of training: program kickoff, attending an installation, securing your own installation.
  • Receive up to $1,700
    • $200 to shadow an installation
    • Plus $750 for finding and completing a HPWH install. Up to two installs.

Mentor Responsibilities

Receive up to $2,450 to support other contractors:

  • Provide a live heat pump water heater installation demonstration at one of your projects for up to three contractors ($200 stipend)
  • Provide on-site guidance to contractors during their first HPWH installation ($750 per install, up to three)

Installation Verification and Stipend Request

Mentors and mentees enrolled in the program must complete the following forms for every installation completed.

  1. Installation Verification Form
  2. Incentive Request Form

Apply for the Next Mentorship Cohort

The deadline to apply for the Santa Clara cohort has passed. If you're interested in joining a future cohort, you are welcome to submit your application to show interest. The next cohort will prioritize Alameda County.
